A Green Search Engine

The name Forestle is deducted from the word “forest”. Forestle is a “green Internet search engine”. We use our advertising revenue to protect endangered rainforest regions in order to keep our worlds most precious ecosystems intact and fight global warming.
Forestle earns advertising revenue from clicks on “sponsored links”. These are text links which are displayed next to the generic search results on the result page of our search engine. The sponsored links at Forestle are delivered by our partner Yahoo.

All of our income (minus about 10% administrative costs) is donated to the adopt an acre program, which is run by The Nature Conservancy – one of the most renowned environmental protection organizations in the world. They use the money, which is generated by Forestle, for the sustainable protection of the most precious rainforests on our planet.

As far as i can see, Forrestle works pretty well. Sometimes even more hits than elGoog. But i can’t say anything about the quality, so check it out yourself! Ah and spread the word! Great idea.

On Friday, Oct 9th 2009 Humans Explode Surface of the Moon

Sadly, this is no joke. ‘In the name of science’ this friday (tomorrow) Nasa will intentionally crash a satellite onto the moon.

How do you feel about that? Is this what should be done? What is your connection to the moon? Do you know how intimately we are linked to its rhythms and dynamics? And so now human genuity will destroy its surface purposefully…How disconnected do you have to be?

At the same time: That seems to be the nature of things right now. That seems to be where it’s at. Curious what it will do. – It hurts, though. Pobre luna…

On Friday, however, the Earth’s nearest neighbour is set to stage one of the strangest moments in space exploration, as Nasa prepares to send a 2.3 tonne satellite smashing into the lunar surface.

If all goes to plan, officials at the space agency say the strike will take place at around 12.30pm UK time, with a booster rocket and $79m satellite slamming into a huge crater near the moon’s south pole.

Colour Schemes

and a few sidebar updates

After the last major design- and feature-update we’ve recieved divided opinions about the new colours. Some readers had issues with readabilty. You can now choose a new colour set “High Contrast” via the drop down menu to the right named “Colours”.

(I know, from a professional designer’s point of view, this new style might not be perfectly balanced and it is certainly not 100% implemented into all deeper site-levels. But a completely new, holistic re-design is in the pipe anayway… so stay tuned!)

Besides that we’ld like to spread the word and promote the Declaration Of Cultural Revolutionaries 2009 in our sidebar as well. In case you’re not into it allready, go check it out!

And btw – since we are talking about interdependence and networking – if you’ld like to suggest a project, you think it’s worth to share and/or to feature on Sound Of Sirens, do not hesitate to contact us!

Back in Biz

Hi.

Sound Of Sirens ist wieder online. Hintergrund der downtime war ein Serverumzug, welcher zwar geplant war,  jedoch nicht zum vereinbarten Termin vom alten Provider eingeleitet, sondern vorgezogen wurde – daher waren wir leider ungewohnt lange offline. Sorry!

Nun sollte jedoch alles wieder beim Alten sein. Sollten Euch irgendwelche Bugs auffallen, bitte wendet Euch direkt an mich.

Statement zu modernen Verwertungsmodellen von Musik

Oder warum die GEMA abgeschafft gehört.

Diesem Beitrag von Andreas Janson aus der Mailinglist des Landesverbandes Berlin der Piratenpartei braucht man eigentlich nichts mehr hinzuzufügen. Sehr viele gute Feststellungen und Ideen zu Verwertung und Lizensierung von Musik im digitalen Zeitalter. Word!

Hallo,

ich als Musiker möchte auch mal meinen Senf dazugeben.

Bitte, bitte, bitte tretet nicht für eine weitere Zwangsabgabe ein. Davon profitiert der kleine Künstler (=99% der Kulturschaffenden) eh nicht. Wir sollten unsere Zeit nicht damit vergeuden, ein hoffnungslos kaputtes System zu reparieren oder überholte Ideen in die Informationsgesellschaft hineinzutragen.

Wir vertreiben unsere Alben seit 2006 unter einer CC-Lizenz. Was ich seit dem gelernt haben:

• Es geht nicht nur um die Künstler sondern auch um den einfachen und günstigen Zugang zu Kunst.
• Privates kopieren darf _nie_ strafbar sein.
• Privates kopieren muss kostenlos möglich sein.
• Fans kaufen trotzdem noch CDs (nicht umsonst war das meistverkaufte Album auf Amazon 2009 ein Creative-Commons-Album)
• Künstler haben eh nie nennenswert an CDs verdient – nur die Verwertungsgesellschaften. Selbst die ganz großen Bands kriegen pro verkaufter CD nur ein paar Cent.
• Künstler verdienen mehr an CDs, wenn sie Labels / Verwertungsgesellschaften umgehen
• Merchandise etc ist eine weitere gute Einnahmequelle
• Die GEMA verhindert Kunst. In ihrer jetzigen Form gehört sie abgeschafft, da sie kleinen Künstlern nur Steine in den Weg legt und Geld an die oberen 1% umverteilt, ohne dass man etwas dagegen tun kann.
• Der Künstler sollte selbst entscheiden können, inwiefern er kommerzielles Kopieren zulässt.
• Kommerzielle Verwendung unserer Musik hat sich zu unserer lukrativsten Einnahmequelle entwickelt.
• Jamendo ist eine hervorragende, lukrative Alternative zur GEMA.
• Jegliche Kultur-Zwangsabgaben gehören abgeschafft, da sie den Markt verzerren (meist zu Gunsten einiger Weniger). Bei Theatern u.ä. würde ich noch mit mir reden lassen, aber Leermedienabgaben, GEZ, GEMA, Kulturflatrate etc gehen gar nicht und sind nicht im Interesse der meisten Kulturschaffenden
• Sehr, sehr Künstler leben noch im letzten Jahrhundert, zumindest was ihr Wissen über und ihre Einstellung zu geistigem Eigentum anbelangt

Was meiner Meinung nach gemacht werden müsste, um einen Interessensausgleich zwischen Urhebern und Konsumenten zu schaffen und dem Großteil der Künstler beste Voraussetzungen zu bieten, tatsächlich einmal Geld mit ihrer Musik zu verdienen (Achtung, manches wiederholt sich):

Lobotomierte Volltrottel

“Interessant” (um es mal möglichst neutral zu formulieren), wie anscheinend viele SPD Abgeordnete ihre Ja-Stimme rechtfertigen: einer von vielen Beiträgen des Law Blogs zum umstrittenenen Gesetz zur Bekämpfung von Kinderpornografie.

Man mag ja von Carsten Dobschats Wortwahl halten, was man möchte – im Kern hat er Recht!

Wer es ganz genau wissen möchte, welcher Abgeordnete des Bundestages wie abgestimmt hat, der kann hier auf der offiziellen Liste nachschauen.

(Eigentlich hätte man ja viel früher auf das Thema eingehen sollen, aber ich war in den letzten Wochen und Monaten zu sehr mit Arbeiten, Updaten und Sicherheitslücken finden und schliessen beschäftigt, als dass ich den eigenen Blog noch von hinten sehen wollte. Entschuldigt. Ich gehe aber davon aus, dass die Sache allgemein bekannt ist. Wer mit der Materie dennoch nicht vertraut ist, einfach die Hand heben, dann reich ich gerne was nach.)

Nachtrag: Interessante Idee in den Kommentaren von Markus:

Man könnte mal darüber nachdenken, ob man im Zuge der Einführung der Manager-(Mit-)Haftung auch eine Politiker-Haftung einführt. Im Falle der Verabschiedung von Gesetzen, welche für den Durchschnitts-Parlamentarier als verfassungswidrig zu erkennen sind, die Verfahrenskosten von deren Vergütung abziehen. Im Wiederholungsfall ein Berufsverbot :-)

Ist halt schwierig jemanden beizubringen, dass man bestimmte Dinge besser erst gar nicht macht anstatt darauf zu bauen, dass Leute, die mehr davon verstehen, schon wieder aufräumen werden. Vorallem wenn keinerlei persönliche Konsequenzen drohen, auch wenn sie noch so gering sein mögen.

Economists say P2P file-sharing fuels art

A pair of economists have released a report arguing that file-sharing doesn’t stifle the creation of music, films, and books. On the contrary, they say, weaker copyright protection has benefited society.
Felix Oberholzer-Gee of Harvard University and Koleman Strumpf of the University of Kansas recently published a working paper (that is, a complete draft of a work-in-progress study soliciting feedback) to Harvard Business School asserting the benefits of internet piracy.
While the study concedes that piracy may harm some business models, it says the technology hasn’t killed the incentives behind artists and entertainment companies to produce new works.
And that, the paper says, is the real point behind copyright.

The Html Patchwork comprises of 216 fabric patches individually embroidered with their websafe colour codes and stitched into a collective patchwork quilt. The Patchwiki is a collective website with a page for each individual stitcher. You can view the wiki pages by clicking on the patchwork represented here.

The Html Patchwork will be presented in the Open Source Embroidery Exhibition at BildMuseet, Umea, Sweden, 6th June – 6th September 2009, and at the Museum of Craft and Folk Art, San Francisco, 1st October 2009 – 24th January 2010.
