Nun auch bei Sound Of Sirens ein Hinweis auf den neusten Wurf aus dem Hause Mozilla:

Die neue Version des Browsers Firefox hat neben den interessanten funktionalen Erweiterungen vor allem auch neue Internas. Die zentrale Rendering-Engine Gecko von Firefox benötigt weniger Speicher und ist merkbar performanter.

Performantere Software, die weniger Computer-Leistung benötigt, ist für die Grüne IT ein wichtiger Eckpfeiler. Denn hiermit wird zum Einen weniger Strom benötigt und zum Anderen es kann ältere Hardware noch länger genutzt werden.

Mit 8 Millionen Downloads in nur 24h (davon alleine über 1 Millionen aus Deutschland) hat Firefox einen neuen Weltrekord aufgestellt und alle Erwartungen gesprengt. Ich werde zwar dennoch bei Safari bleiben zum privaten Surfen, da er immer noch einen Tick flüssiger läuft als Firefox auf meinem PPC Mac, aber zumindest allen Windows Nutzern möchte ich den Download dringend ans Herz legen. Und natürlich sollten auch alle Mac Nutzer sofort updaten, da nicht nur die Geschwindigkeit und Performance merkbar gestiegen ist, sondern auch so einige neue, gelungene Funktionen hinzugekommen sind.

Anything but sustainable, but definitely a nice piece of interior design for geeks like us me. Allthough i seriously got enough of displays at work, at home and… uhm… in my entire life… and i’m very aware of my their carbon footprint (especially if it’s non-sense like this)… dunno, somehow i like this green-haired little guy:

People working in this field are called Consumer-Ethnographers. And sometimes I get the feeling that they look at ‘consumers’ a bit like the old ethnographers were investigating ‘the brutes’ back then…quite similar notions and quite similar blindfolds sometimes… Interesting species, these ‘consumers’, aren’t they. And if investigated properly the knowledge of their behaviour will make you rich (first and foremost) and better than the others.

Doesn’t change much, the way of perceiving and thinking, does it. I figure, burned down to the basics, again you’re at growth, competition and expansion oriented folks, manipulating, instrumentalizing and exploiting people and nature. As eco and sustainable you call the development, as ‘eco-embedded’ it would ‘have to become’ - in my book there won’t be any sustainability as long as there is an ethnographer investigating a consumer in order to…

This is nowhere near an understanding of our interconnected nature with our surroundings. This is repeating the same patterns.

Got the news by Engadget (you’ll find a video about a mechanical aqua jelly over there, too) and Festo is the company behind those incredible machines.

Hört sich komisch an, oder? ‘In 2025 das Wetter besitzen’… Ich werd einfach versuchen, zu erklären worum es geht…:

Es geht um ‘Chemtrails’, das ist ein US Patent zur ‘Stratosphärischen Welsbach-Anreicherung zwecks Reduktion der globalen Erwärmung’.
Auf deutsch: Mit Flugzeugen wird eine Flüssigkeit (hauptsächlich Bariumsalze und Aluminium) in die Atmosphäre gesprüht, milchige Streifen entstehen und breiten sich aus und lassen so weniger Sonnenlicht auf die Erdoberfläche durchdringen. Die Aluminiumteilchen reflektieren das Sonnenlicht zurück in den Weltraum - die Temperatur fällt bis zu 10 Grad. Easy, no? Der Spiegel hat auch schon davon berichtet (wenn auch nicht sehr reflektiert…). Sogar das IPCC (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change) sieht darin Möglichkeiten zur Bekämpfung der globalen Erwärmung.

Und so langsam werde ich wieder unruhig…: Abgesehen von den Nebeneffekten dieser Eingriffe, abgesehen von der Tatsache, dass es sich hier um puren Anthropozentrismus handelt und um eine absolut mechanische Sicht der Erde und ihrer Abläufe, möchte ich auf den Hintergrund und die ursprüngliche Intension der Chemtrails hinweisen:

Das Thema geistert ja schon länger durch the interwebs. So mehr und mehr Provider und IT-Firmen rüsten ihre Rechenzentren um. Energieeffizienz ohne Performanceeinbußen - kennt man ja aus der Autoindustrie. Die Computerzeitung hat einen sehr interessanten Artikel darüber verfasst, welcher Chancen und Möglichkeiten aufzeigt, aber auch nicht mit Kritik spart.

Schmunzeln musste ich gleich schon bei der Einleitung, in welcher es heisst, dass Unternehmen 60(!)% ihrer Ressourcen dank eines sinnvollen IT-Einsatzes einsparen könnten. Es scheint wohl noch wirklich viele eMail-Ausdrucker da draussen zu geben… hehe.

In occasion of a new exhibiton called Media Art in the Age of Transgenics, Cloning, and Genomics i’d like to spread some relatied links.

Let’s start with We make Mony Not Art. They’ve got 2 very nice articles about “Ecological Strategies in Today’s Art” - part 1 & part 2, which base on a same named exhibiton at Edith Russ Site for Media Art. You’ll find a lot of background info and links there!

There is a huge field called Bio Art or Biotech Art where “the medium is living matter and the “works of art” are produced in laboratories and/or artists’ and designers’ studios. [...]“ (Wikipedia) For example DNA-visualisations are a popluar theme. My favourite blog about that all is Organism: Making Art with Living Systems. They take a step forward by posting more critical works, too.

German readers find an interesting article at arte.tv called “Was ist ‘Biokunst’? – Ein mutierender Begriff unter der Lupe”. I’s from 2004 but still quite worthy to read, i guess. It referrs to a french site named Colloque Bioart (which seems to be currently broken, unfortunately).

Several noticeable artists are Caitlin Berrigan, Adam Zaretzky, Brandon Ballengee and Kathy High. (They all take part at the New Museum exhibiton, btw.) WMMNA calls them the “cream of biotech art”.

And another good ressource is neural.it - filed under “art, biotech, music, science, sound” you’ll find some more flashy projects, exhibitons and artists. Neural.it is available in italian & english.
