Again the States…
On Saturday, September 27, a national mobilization will be launched to say, “I’m ready for the green economy.”, ready to tackle the climate crisis by building a green economy strong enough to lift people out of poverty.
Green Jobs Now is a National Day of Action that will empower everyday people to stage hundreds of grassroots events throughout the country. There will be a special focus on low-income communities, communities of color and indigenous people.
Right now, there are millions of people ready to work and countless jobs to be done that will strengthen the economy at home. There are thousands of buildings that need to be weatherized, solar panels to be installed, and wind turbines to be erected. There are communities that need local and sustainable food and people ready to farm the crops. There are public transit systems and smart electricity grids in need of engineers and electricians. Americans are ready to build the new economy.

And guess how they will launch it:
There will be block parties, house parties, teach-ins, living room discussions, public programs with food, music, poetry. It is up to you. As long as the event is positive and fun, the possibilities are endless… and they make it easy for you to join!

The great thing about the States is that beside the most ignorant politicians and the most unethical corporate system you will find a lot of people with a sense of self-responsibility and creativity who put ideas into action.

Read into their principles and ethics, it’s inspiring! Have a look at the diversity of offerings/elements, it’s fun! Makes me want it to happen in Germany…

The development and practices of Monsanto, the worlds largest corporation connected to GMO, pestizides and fertilizer are so outrages and stunning to me and touch on such vital issues for everybodies well-being, that I will continue to write about it and I will call the series ‘About food’ for now. I have the feeling ‘About water’ will follow…

Let’s start with some quotes of the documentary ‘The world according to Monsanto‘, which you should have a look at on youtube! (Note: For people in the US it is very hard to get this information, since ’somebody’ obviously does not want it to be revealed and continues to urge youtube to take the videos off their server…).

‘It shows an organization that is determinded to push its products into countries around the world and is determinded to destroy the reputation of anybody who stands in their way.’

‘They want to control seed. They want to control life.’

‘This is a bigger weapon than bombs.’

‘They are in the process of owning food. All food!’

‘The result is that Monsanto is depriving us of our food sovereignty, of our ability to feed ourselves and that we become dependent on their seeds and products.’

This is not science fiction and we are not talking ‘third world’, we are talking the US and Latin America, we are talking India and China, we are talking the British Islands, we are talking France and Germany, we are talking ‘next to you’.

“LobbyControl ist ein gemeinnütziger Verein, der über Machtstrukturen und Einflussstrategien in Deutschland und der EU aufklären will.”

Sehr, sehr lobenswertes Projekt, welches aktive Aufklärungsarbeit in Form eines Blogs, Printpublikationen, Events und Studien leistet. Besonders angetan hat es mir natürlich die Studie über Greenwashing in Deutschland.

Ich wünsche mir viel mehr öffentliche Aufmerksamkeit bezüglich den Einfluss von Unternehmen und Marken auf Politik und Gesellschaft. NGO’s wie LobbyControl leisten meiner Meinung nach einen unschätzbaren Dienst - und sei es auch nur die Dokumentation. Ich bin sogar der Meinung, dass der Umgang mit Marketing aus Sicht des Konsumenten ein Teil der Schulbildung sein sollte. Auf Grund der enormen Vernetzung von Politik, Medien und Wirtschaft, sowie der rasant Ansteigenden Relevanz neuer und/oder alternativer Werbeformen wird es immer schwerer, tatsächliche Absender und Hintergründe von Informationen zu erkennen - und schliesslich soll uns ja die Schule dabei helfen, als mündige Bürger durch das Leben zu gehen. Naja, nur so ein Gedanke.

In diesem Zusammenhang möchte ich auch auf die Online-Aktion für Lobbytransparenz in Europa hinweisen, bei der es um mehr Transparenz in der europäischen Entscheidungsfindung geht. Macht mit!

Die Energy Watch Group veröffentlichte im Mai ihren neuen Bericht. Ausserdem ist heute, am 22.5.08 der Rohölpreis so hoch wie noch nie. Und in den letzten 12 Monaten ist der Preis um 100 Prozent gestiegen. Eigentlich ein guter Grund sich entsprechende Sound Of Sirens Artikel nochmal durchzulesen.

Peak Oil ist ‘jetzt’

Seit einiger Zeit tobt eine heftige Debatte um das weltweite Ölfördermaximum („Peak Oil“). Institutionen mit großer Nähe zur Energiebranche, wie etwa das Consulting-Unternehmen CERA, betreiben eine Kampagne zur „Entlarvung“ der „Peak-Oil-Theorie“. Die vorliegende Studie gehört zu einer langen Reihe von Arbeiten, die innerhalb und außerhalb der ASPO (Association for the Study of Peak Oil and Gas, etwa: Vereinigung zum Studium des Fördermaximums von Öl und Gas) entstanden sind und zeigen, dass das Ölfördermaximum keinesfalls mehr als „Theorie“ bezeichnet werden kann, sondern eine Realität ist, die sich bereits vor unseren Augen abspielt.
…Den Analysen unseres Szenarios zufolge ist das weltweite Ölfördermaximum 2006 eingetreten…
…Die wichtigste Erkenntnis ist, dass die Ölförderung nach dem Peak einen steilen Rückgang erleben wird.

Ok, this is about the media and its functions. Again: I do not claim to be an expert, call me a generalist, however, let’s see how far we get.

I’ll start with a quote of a beautiful essay by Donella Meadows, a professor, biophysicist, systems analyst, organic farmer, author, journalist and inspiration in the movement for sustainability. The essay is called ‘Dancing with Systems‘ and this particular part is about ‘Honouring and protecting information.’

A decision maker can’t respond to information he or she doesn’t have, can’t respond accurately to information that is inaccurate, can’t respond in a timely way to information that is late. I would guess that 99 percent of what goes wrong in systems goes wrong because of faulty or missing information.

If I could, I would add an Eleventh Commandment: Thou shalt not distort, delay, or sequester information. You can drive a system crazy by muddying its information streams. You can make a system work better with surprising ease if you can give it more timely, more accurate, more complete information.

Ok, there have been a lot of videos lately on Sound Of Sirens. Still, Vandana Shiva is making a point about the global food crisis which i consider very important to be known and understood. By the way: The IMF is the International Monetary Fund, which is an international organization that oversees the global financial system. The headquarters are located in Washington, D.C. USA…

Der relativ kleine Raum des Schumacher Colleges war voll, richtig voll. Klar, Vandana Shiva ist echt ein Erlebnis! Zusammen mit Transition Towns Totnes veranstaltet das Schmacher College regelmässig offene Abende, diesmal war Vandana Shiva eingeladen: ‘Transformation of societies: Development, what next?’

Vandana Shiva ist eine inspirierende Persönlichkeit, einfach und freundlich im Auftreten, mit bestechendem Intellekt. Sie hat die Gabe, ausser den Fakten und Zahlen auch die Dynamiken und Strukturen, die dahinter stehen, anschaulich und sehr zugänglich darzustellen.

Als Einstieg gab Vandana Shiva einen kurzen Abriss über fünf vorherrschende Annahmen, die der westlichen Ökonomie zugrunde liegen und legte deren zerstörerische Auswirkung auf Natur und Menschen dar. Dann ging sie eingehend auf das Thema Biogas und Biodiesel ein. Irgendwo war mir schon klar, dass Biogas/Biodiesel im grossen Stil ‘Schmarrn’ ist, so to speak, aber ich war geplättet, dass weltweit in Biogas/Biodiesel eine ‘Lösung’ gesehen wird und geschockt darüber, wie weit die Umsetzung fortgeschritten ist, geschockt über das Ausmass der Auswirkungen auf die Umwelt, auf Bauern, auf ganze Kulturen. Und alles nur, um den Zusammenbruch unserer bestehenden Ökonomie und unserer Lebensweise, die auf Öl basieren, ein paar Jahre hinaus zu schieben! Macht mich sprachlos. Und was für einen Stellenwert hat Mobilität, das Auto, in unserer Gesellschaft, und was für einen Einfluss die Autoindustrie!

Der Entwurf für das Gentechnik-Gesetz stößt auf heftige Kritik. Er soll am 24. Januar - also übermorgen - im Bundestag verabschiedet werden. Am Dienstag den 15.1.08 wurde beim Deutschen Bundestag eine öffentliche Petition zu diesem Thema online gestellt: Eine ideale Möglichkeit, dem deutschen Bundestag durch Mitzeichnung seine Meinung kund zu tun!
