As flashy as the title may sound, let’s give them another flashy name, let’s call them renegades of architecture. Working with what is there (which is mostly considered garbage) they are creating sustainable and affordable housing. As Michael Reynolds, the architect who builds ‘earthships’ since the seventies (with much opposition of local authorities, so that you wonder about their interests…) put it: ‘I don’t care about anything but the fucking planet!’
Earthships are earth-sheltered autonomous buildings made of tires rammed with earth, which are usually arranged in “U” or horseshoe shaped modules. Each tire is rammed full of earth manually using a sledge hammer. Windows on the sunny side admit light and heat. The open end of the “U” shaped structure faces South in the northern hemisphere, and North in the southern hemisphere, so that the house will catch maximum sunlight in the colder months. An Earthship is designed to interface with its environment wherever possible and create its own utilities. (via Wikipedia)

Die Energy Watch Group veröffentlichte im Mai ihren neuen Bericht. Ausserdem ist heute, am 22.5.08 der Rohölpreis so hoch wie noch nie. Und in den letzten 12 Monaten ist der Preis um 100 Prozent gestiegen. Eigentlich ein guter Grund sich entsprechende Sound Of Sirens Artikel nochmal durchzulesen.

Die wichtigsten Erkenntnisse
Peak Oil ist ‘jetzt’
Seit einiger Zeit tobt eine heftige Debatte um das weltweite Ölfördermaximum („Peak Oil“). Institutionen mit großer Nähe zur Energiebranche, wie etwa das Consulting-Unternehmen CERA, betreiben eine Kampagne zur „Entlarvung“ der „Peak-Oil-Theorie“. Die vorliegende Studie gehört zu einer langen Reihe von Arbeiten, die innerhalb und außerhalb der ASPO (Association for the Study of Peak Oil and Gas, etwa: Vereinigung zum Studium des Fördermaximums von Öl und Gas) entstanden sind und zeigen, dass das Ölfördermaximum keinesfalls mehr als „Theorie“ bezeichnet werden kann, sondern eine Realität ist, die sich bereits vor unseren Augen abspielt.

It was held on the day of the unleashing of Transition Town Lewes in England. Johnstone feels inspired by communities creating their own energy descent plan and gives an insight into the Transition Towns Initiatives and its larger context.

The following text is the conclusion of the Oilreport done by Energy Watch Group in October 2007:
The major result from this analysis is that world oil production has peaked in 2006. Production will start to decline at a rate of several percent per year. By 2020, and even more by 2030, global oil supply will be dramatically lower. This will create a supply gap which can hardly be closed by growing contributions from other fossil, nuclear or alternative energy sources in this time frame.
The world is at the beginning of a structural change of its economic system. This change will be triggered by declining fossil fuel supplies and will influence almost all aspects of our daily life.
Climate change will also force humankind to change energy consumption patterns by reducing significantly the burning of fossil fuels. Global warming is a very serious problem. However, the focus of this paper is on the aspects of resource depletion as these are much less transparent to the public.

Das Hauptergebnis der vorliegenden Analyse besteht in dem Befund, dass die Weltölförderung 2006 ihr Maximum erreicht hat und zukünftig mit einer Rate von mehreren Prozent jährlich zurückgehen wird. Bis 2020 und umso mehr bis 2030 ist ein dramatischer Rückgang der Ölförderung zu erwarten. Dadurch wird eine Versorgungslücke entstehen, die innerhalb dieses Zeitrahmens kaum durch die wachsenden Beiträge anderer fossiler, nuklearer oder alternativer Energiequellen geschlossen werden kann.
Die Weltwirtschaft steht am Anfang eines tiefen Strukturwandels. Dieser Wandel wird durch den Rückgang der Versorgung mit fossilen Brennstoffen ausgelöst, und er wird beinahe jeden Aspekt unseres Alltagslebens beeinflussen.
Ebenso wird der Klimawandel die Menschheit zwingen, ihre Energieverbrauchsmuster durch eine drastische Reduzierung der Verbrennung von fossilen Brennstoffen zu ändern. Die globale Erwärmung ist ein sehr ernstes Problem. Der Schwerpunkt der vorliegenden Studie liegt allerdings auf der Erschöpfung der Rohstoffvorräte mit allen zugehörigen Aspekten, da diese für die Öffentlichkeit wesentlich weniger transparent sind.
Die Transition Town Initiative ist momentan der vielversprechenste Vorschlag, wie Individuen, Gruppen und Kommunen auf Klimawandel und Peak Oil reagieren können. Rob Hopkins ist Begründer der Initiative. Für ihn ist klar, dass Peak Oil und Klimawandel nicht getrennt gesehen werden können, dass nicht ein Phänomen bedrohlicher als das andere ist. (In der bisherigen Politik und Diskussion ist das selten, was oft fatale Schlussfolgerungen zur Folge hat, siehe zum Beispiel den Hirsch Report).
Rob Hopkins’ Lösungsvorschlag ist: ‘Relocalisation’, das heisst die Stärkung der örtlichen Ă–konomie und der sozialen Bindungen, und ‘Resilience’, das heisst Systeme anpassungsfähig zu machen. Ein anderer entscheidender Punkt ist, dass eine positive Vision entwickelt wird. Die Motivation kommt also nicht aus der Angst vor der Katastrophe, sondern von dem positiven Bild, wie unsere Zukunft aussehen kann (die zugrunde liegende psychologische These ist, dass wir nur handeln, wenn wir eine Zukunft sehen, fĂĽr die es sich zu handeln lohnt). Hopkins hat ein klares Design des Ăśbergangsprozesses entwickelt, dem die Permakultur Prinzipien zugrunde liegen. September 2006 launchte er zusammen mit Naresh Giangrande in Totnes die Initiative, der sich inzwischen viele englische Dörfer und Kommunen angeschlossen haben. Auch in Irland, Schottland, Wales, Australien und Neuseeland bilden sich Gruppen.
Die Initiative stellt grosszĂĽgig Informationen, ein Netzwerk und die Begleitung des Prozesses zur VerfĂĽgung. Bald war dem Team klar, dass die Grundlagen - sowohl Wissen als auch Handwerk - den Leuten und Gruppen, die in die Bewegung einsteigen wollen, vermittelt werden mĂĽssen. Sophy Banks and Naresh Giangrande haben ein sehr informatives, praktisches und inspirierendes Training entwickelt, das sie in Totnes und an anderen Orten innerhalb der UK anbieten. Letztes Wochenende haben Lars und ich an so einem Training in Totnes, Devon teilgenommen.
‘An exploration of craft, design and the aesthetics of sustainability‘… das ist das Thema einer kleinen Veranstaltung gestern Abend im Bogan Haus, Totnes. Diavortrag von Toni Spencer, Schumacher College und MitbegrĂĽnderin von Sustainable Makers, einem Zusammenschluss von lokalen Handwerkern und Kunsthandwerkern im Rahmen der Transition Towns Bewegung. Anschliessend läd sie dazu ein, Erfahrungen auszutauschen und Fragen zu stellen. Im Thema selbst und in der Art wie ‘das Publikum’ reagiert, erzählt und diskutiert liegt eine Selbstverständlichkeit, die wir nicht gewohnt sind. Diskutiert wird nicht darĂĽber, ob und warum wir unseren Lebensstil und unser Bewusstsein ändern mĂĽssen, sondern darĂĽber, wie wir das tun können, welche Möglichkeiten es gibt, welche Ideen und Visionen, welche vorhandenen Infrastukturen, welche erst noch gedacht und erschaffen werden mĂĽssen und darĂĽber, wo Hindernisse und Herausforderungen im bestehenden Bewusstsein, Verhalten und Gesellschaftssystem liegen.
Das alles unter dem Aspekt von einem kreativen Umgang mit den Konsequenzen von Peakoil, Climate Change & Co., und einem kĂĽnstlerisch-ästhetischen Anspruch an Design. Ein interessanter, schöner und wichtiger Trend an britischen Kunsthochschulen: es geht immer mehr darum, selber in die Erfahrung des Machens zu gehen und anderen Erfahrungen zu ermöglichen, das Produkt ist nicht mehr Fokus der Ausbildung und des Designs! Auch wandelt sich die Bedeutung von dem, was Design ist und leisten kann: inzwischen wird der Prozess designed und nicht das Produkt, soziale und umweltpolitische Vorgänge und Zusammenhänge sind Thema, nicht nur rein ästhetisch-kĂĽnstlerische….Spannend.
First of all, I have to tell you that we had difficulties in deciding wether to write in english or german. Still have…So if any of you would like to know more or get some german input, let us know. We are in the process of meeting/exploring/exchanging with people working in similar areas or with similar interests, and there is a lot of great stuff happening in the UK, so here we go.

Beautiful initiative from England. From and for those who realize what kind of impact peakoil and climate change will have on our society and lifestyle. The Transition Town Movement is helping people and towns to transform existing infrastructure and society setup into a sustainable community. The list of towns participating in the transition network is growing…Wonder when german towns will start to connect to them.
