Masanobu Fukuoka died in August

Sunday, September 14th, 2008

For me Masanobu Fukuoka was a poet. He is known as one of the pioneers of natural farming and was an inspiration for the originators of the permaculture concept.

“If a single new bud is snipped off a fruit tree with a pair of scissors, that may bring about a disorder which cannot be undone
. Human beings with their tampering do something wrong, leave the damage unrepaired, and when the adverse results accumulate, work with all their might to correct them.”

“To become one with nature — agriculture is an occupation in which a farmer adapts himself to nature. To do that, you have to gaze at a rice plant and listen to the words from the plant. If you understand what the rice says, you just adjust your heart to that of the rice plants and raise them. In reality, we do not have to raise them. They will grow. We just serve nature. A piece of advice I need to give you here. When I say gaze at a rice plant or stare at its true form, it does not mean to make an observation or to contemplate the rice plant, which makes it an object different from yourself. It is very difficult to explain in words. In a sense, it is important that you become the rice plant. Just as you, as the subject of gazing, have to disappear. If you do not understand what you should do or what I am talking about, you should be absorbed in taking care of the rice without looking aside. If you could work wholeheartedly without yourself, that is enough. Giving up your ego is the shortest way to unification with nature.”

One Straw Revolution is maybe one of his best known books (’Der Grosse Weg Hat Kein Tor‘ auf deutsch) and even if you are not particularily interested in gardening, I recommend to read it, and if it’s just for a few paragraphs.

Friedensreich und Scheisse

Tuesday, June 10th, 2008

Ziemlich neue Semantik, isn’t it…

Lernen fĂŒr nachhaltiges Leben - Das Schumacher College

Friday, March 14th, 2008

schumacher collegeThe Schumacher College, in partnership with the University of Plymouth, is the first in the world to offer a post-graduate programme in Holistic Science.’

Was in Totnes’ bookshelves steht

Tuesday, March 11th, 2008

Sound of Sirens on Tour

Thursday, February 28th, 2008

on tourFirst of all, I have to tell you that we had difficulties in deciding wether to write in english or german. Still have…So if any of you would like to know more or get some german input, let us know. Otherwise we’ll keep it english. We are in the process of meeting/exploring/exchanging with people working in similar areas or with similar interests, and there is a lot of great stuff happening in the UK, so here we go.

These are some of the activities on our list:

There will be a talk with Toni Spencer of the Schumacher College:
An Ecology of Making: A Community of Things
An exploration of crafts, design and the aesthetics of sustainability

a talk with Vandana Shiva:
The transformation of Societies. What comes after development?

There will be practical input like a pruning workshop, loads of permaculture and other projects to visit, we will participate in a Transition Town Training in Totnes and then head to London, meeting people from an acting school and more. That’s the rough outline. We will see what emerges around it…Maybe we’ll just enjoy spring for a minute!…

We’ll let you know about all that right here!…

We do not need to invent sustainable communities…

Tuesday, February 26th, 2008

This is an text excerpt from Fritjof Capra’s ‘Hidden Connections’. Enjoy…

…We do not need to invent sustainable human communities. We can learn from societies that have lived sustainably for centuries. We can also model communities after nature’s ecosystems, which are sustainable communities of plants, animals, and microorganisms. Since the outstanding characteristic of the biosphere is its inherent ability to sustain life, a sustainable human community must be designed in such a manner that its technologies and social institutions honor, support, and cooperate with nature’s inherent ability to sustain life…

The german title of ‘Hidden Connections’ is ‘Verborgene ZusammenhĂ€nge’…

The 5 R Mantra

Friday, February 22nd, 2008

The “5Rs” are an exploration of the themes Respect, Rethink, Reduce, Reuse, Recycle. These Earth-loving actions allow us to reduce our impact on our Earth and add deeper meaning and joy to our lives.

monteverde-cloud-forest.jpg

Respect: Have respect for the planet, for your own health, and for other people. It gives birth to less destructive habits.

Rethink: When you’re shopping give thought to the items you purchase. Think about where they come from and where they’ll go. Rethink your old ways of consuming.

Reduce: After rethinking, it’s easier to cut out items that could be harmful to you or the environment. reducing diminishes the amount of energy and resources used, reduses waste and pollution, and sends a message to manufactures - if we don’t buy it, they won’t make it.

Reuse: Instead of throwing away. It’s more than just recycling.

Recycle: If an item cannot be reused, then recycle it.

natural capitalism Natural Capitalism: Creating the Next Industrial Revolution by Paul Hawken, Amory Lovins, and L. Hunter Lovins is an important and very valuable book, that has been set free by the authors for everyone to read. Again…:
Information is the critical potential resource. It becomes a resource only when obtained and acted upon.

Rediscovering Ways Of Understanding

Thursday, January 31st, 2008

For those of you who are worrying or wondering about a lifestyle of health and sustainability…:

‘…Within this current benign and remarkably stable interglacial climate, humanity has developed agriculture, what we call civilisation, and finally global industrial culture. All of them have accelerated the pace and power of human cultural and environmental change, but all are dependent on the fragile stability of the interglacial paradise. While the adverse effects of global warming have created a reason once more to contemplate our dependence on larger forces and circumstances, any serious consideration of the next ice age (due any time in the next thousand years or so) would have us designing a modest, generalist, flexible culture, carried by a small global population able to make the transition into and through the long slow years of ice age. We need to break out of the delusion of apparently linear acceleration of human material and numerical progress to a world view in which everything is contained by cycles, waves and pulses that flow between polarities of great stability and intense change, all nested one within the other.
This cyclical view of time is not some new idea, but simply a rediscovery of ways of understanding that are embedded in human cultural history and our collective unconscious.’

Excerpt of: Permaculture / Principles and Pathways Beyond Sustainability by David Holmgren

12.01.08 - Permaculture Info Evening

Thursday, January 10th, 2008

PermaculturePermaculture is a creative design response to a world of declining energy and resource availability.’ - David Holmgren, co-originator of the permaculture concept

The permaculture concept offers a path to a simpler, more sustainable and better-quality life.

The idea of permaculture integrates a great variety of knowledge and provides very practical tools that are useful for/can be applied by everyone and in everyday life. It integrates a way of (systems)thinking and the use of design principles in order to create sustainable systems in a wide range of fields, be it in nature or society.

@ Vielfalter, Organic Food and Cafe, 4pm, Brunnenstrasse 147, 10115 Berlin

The Original Definition of Permaculture

‘Permaculture (permanent agriculture) is the conscious design and maintenance of agriculturally productive ecosystems which have the diversity, stability, and resilience of natural ecosystems.

The philosophy behind permaculture is one of working with, rather than against, nature; of protracted and thoughtful observation rather than protracted and thoughtless action; of looking at systems in all their functions, rather than asking only one yield of them; and of allowing systems to demonstrate their own evolutions.’
